Healthy, Happy Holidays

The holidays are right around the corner and so is the new year. We often choose to make new year resolutions relating to eating right and exercising more. The key to keeping your weight down is to eat a healthy diet by eating the right number of calories you need for energy.

Energy balance is creating an equilibrium between energy in and energy out. If you eat or drink more calories than your body needs, you might put on weight. Your body stores the energy you do not use as fat. If you eat and drink too little, you could end up losing weight instead. Make sure you eat a wide variety of foods so you have a balanced diet and your body is getting the right food it needs to function.  Eating healthy can be easy, affordable and delicious. It’s all about making smart choices to build an overall healthy dietary pattern and maintain a healthy weight.

Tips to healthy eating include:

  • Drinking water or substituting sparkling water, unsweetened tea and sugar free beverages in place of alcohol or soda.
  • Some oils are better for you than others, such as olive oil and sunflower oil.
  • Refrain from adding butter and lard to holiday foods.
  • Try using whole wheat bread or rye bread for stuffing instead of white bread.
