With Thanksgiving behind us, it’s now time for most of us to start decorating our homes for the holidays. It’s easy to sing along to songs and get caught up in the holiday spirit while decorating and forget about safety. This year take some precautions to prevent falling off roofs and ladders. Emergency rooms treat up to 13,000 people a year for cuts, falls, back strains and broken bones from holiday decorating. Don’t fall victim to your ladder this season and take the following precautions and adhere to the safety tips.
Holiday Safety Decorating Tips
Outside Decorating:
Before putting up any lights or outside decorations, cautiously inspect the holiday lights to check for frayed, cracked and bulbs that are out. When you go to replace bulbs make sure that they are unplugged to prevent electrocution. Refrain from connecting more than one extension cord together. Use plastic clips instead of metal nails to hold outside lights in place. Always make sure to turn off holiday lights before going to sleep to prevent fires.
Trees:
Once you get your tree for the holidays, pick out a spot that is safe away from heaters, fireplaces, radiators and vents in your home. Keep a fire extinguisher in your home near your tree to prevent it from catching fire since it is extremely flammable when the lights are turned on. Make sure to keep your tree watered and hydrated. Try checking the w=water levels at the base of the tree at least once every other day.
Using Ladders:
When climbing a ladder work together and have someone spot for you. Have another support the ladder if it is leaning against a building to prevent falls. Do not climb up on anything without using a ladder. Make sure the ladder is lined up properly and choose the correct size for the job at hand.
Say no to small decorative pieces and fake food:
This holiday season avoid using decorations that like food or candy if you have young children or pets. If one of your favorite decorations falls into this category, make sure to place it up high out of the reach of children. Refrain from using poinsettias as well since they are very poisonous if ingested by pets or children. Make sure to monitor children around holiday decorations that have small pieces that can fall off or can be pulled off.
